It took us five years to sell the first 50.000 experiences, which I wrote a post about in 2017. It took us 18 months to reach an additional 50.000 transactions
In late 2017 I delivered a plan to my business partner and chairman. A plan that essentially meant:
- That we would kill off all projects that did not contribute 100% to our core business.
- That we would say goodbye to good colleagues.
- That the most important task for my board in 2018 was to keep me focused and make sure that I and the rest of the team would put all energy and thought into our core business.
A plan that would force us to prioritize our core business and say no to everything else with a goal of accelerating growth and double down on profitability. In theory that sounds easy, in real life it is hard because it involves tough decisions.
It worked. As the numbers show.
Since I published the 50k-post in 2017, I have gotten a lot of emails and messages from people all over the world, working within different businesses in the tours & activities space. People asking me for advice. That is really cool and very unexpected. However, I am not an expert and I don’t think I know the truth yet. But I can tell you one thing:
You must protect your focus with everything you have. And then you need to have patience in the process.
It’s simple and it’s hard. Because I am an entrepreneur. At the end of the day, I live to build: companies, projects and relationships.
It is what gives me energy and happiness. And that, I think, is the great “entrepreneurial paradox”. Starting something new is easy and without constraints. But building something big and lasting, requires focus and patience. And that is two very different things requiring very different mindsets and mentalities. The key for me has been to find growth and optimisation projects within the limits of our core business and then consider them as new projects — that gives me the entrepreneurial satisfaction of building something new, while contributing to the core business as well.
The good news is that focus is like a muscle, it gets stronger the more you practice. And when you see the effect and the results, it gets easier and easier.
That’s it. I’ll get back to building our business even bigger and stronger.
I want to try to add the next 100k experiences sold before… 31/12/2019?
